At the famous Palermo Polo grounds in fabulous Buenos Aires, considered the world over “the Cathedral of Polo”, I caught up with Mr. Jonathan Baggot-Stafford, President of luxury brand Marcela Calvet.
Although this was a rather unconventional place to ask for a formal interview, I nevertheless ventured to ask him a few questions about the Calvet brand. My desire was to gain further insight about how a relative newcomer to the world of luxury handbags, has managed to gain an impressive following in such a short period of time.
According to him, this is due to the marriage of “great design and superlative hand-craftsmanship, which requires such a level of expertise, skill and artistry.”
If one considers that Marcela Calvet is increasingly becoming a top player in the luxury segment, particularly because the company uses traditional hand craftsmanship techniques, it would be safe to assume that this may be the main reason behind what sets this brand apart from its closest competitors.
In decades past, the best handbags were made by hand; and if we look at those designs today, it becomes quite evident that those artisans knew very well what they were doing. Their attention to detail is clearly discernible; and this appears to be one of the tenets at Marcela Calvet: to stay true to the tradition of purveying stunning handcrafted designs in limited editions.
Since the company has centralised all of its production activity at their Buenos Aires atelier, they employ the same methods that were brought to Argentina over a century ago, by the Italian masters who had immigrated to Buenos Aires. In addition to this, they carefully appoint the artisans entrusted with preserving the company’s heritage.
According to Baggot-Stafford “Becoming a Calvet craftsperson entails not only competence but talent and artistry. Novices remain under the supervision of a Master Artisan until they acquire the abilities necessary to fully craft a Calvet design; thus guaranteeing the quality that exemplifies our brand. This includes cutting the pattern, stitching the interior and exterior of the bag, and applying the hardware. In this manner, the artisan remains the sole person to bring the creation to life.”
In the fashion industry where not so many companies go the route of manufacturing their products by hand, it is refreshing to learn that there is a rather large segment of the population who actually prefer and select very well-crafted hand-made handbags.
When asked about the well-known fact that the company continues to remain exclusive, in terms of who their clients are, the limited-edition status of their collections, and the venues where the products are available, Mr. Baggot-Stafford stated that they make their exquisite handbags on a limited-edition basis because true craftsmanship is labour intensive; therefore it is quite costly to produce.
For the Calvet brand, remaining exclusive is the norm. The company never intended to become main stream because with each stunning collection Marcela Calvet pays tribute to the iconic heritage that had defined an era. Their handbags exude a sense of elegance, sophisticated chic and avant-garde style which are the embodiment of the “Callot and Calvet” woman of yesteryear.
As the new Calvet label moves forward, they will continue to honour its fine lineage; thus ensuring that present and future generations will also discover the Calvet commitment to fine materials, rigorous craftsmanship, and avant-garde design.
